The principles behind the winemaking are nature, craft and simplicity. There are no preconceived stylistic goals, other than balance and appropriateness with food. The wine does not need to be the same every year, it is simply intended to represent the vineyards from which it is made, and the season in which it was grown.

MATTHIASSON also produces wines made using unusual varieties and/or uncommon winemaking techniques, including skin-fermented Ribolla gialla, low alcohol Cabernet franc, Refosco, whole cluster-pressed Syrah, botrysized Flora dessert wine, and rich aged Chardonnay that has never seen new oak only available to our Wine Club members. 2011 MATTHIASSON Napa Valley Merlot, Red Hen Vineyard

2011 MATTHIASSON Napa Valley Merlot, Red Hen Vineyard

The wine is 100% Merlot from the historic Red Hen Vineyard nestled into the crook of Dry Creek on rocky soil. The wine is very structured — more cabernet-like — but has the richness and aromatic profile of Merlot. The intense cherry and chocolate aromas are a trademark of the vineyard, and are always balanced by notes of tea and earth. 73 Cases produced. Limited to 3 bottles per customer.

2012 MATTHIASSON Napa Valley Ribolla Gialla, Matthiasson Vineyard

2012 MATTHIASSON Napa Valley Ribolla Gialla, Matthiasson Vineyard

The Ribolla gialla tastes like hazelnuts, baking spices, meyer lemon curd, Bartlett pear, but most of all it has a stony minerality that is incredibly distinctive. There is supple tannic structure and fresh balanced acidity, with great weight and length given the low alcohol. 233 Cases produced. Limited to 6 bottles per customer.

2013 MATTHIASSON Napa Valley Chardonnay, Linda Vista Vineyard

2013 MATTHIASSON Napa Valley Chardonnay, Linda Vista Vineyard

This wine is 100 percent Chardonnay from the Linda Vista Vineyard just across the creek from our house in the Oak Knoll Area. Showing green and yellow apples, peaches, melon, and honey on the nose and through to the palate, the high acidity is balanced by pleasant fleshiness, finishing very clean with a hint of minerality. Refreshing and with moderate alcohol, this wine is all about pleasure, begging to be drunk up, with some oysters or a roast chicken.

2012 MATTHIASSON Napa Valley White Wine

2012 MATTHIASSON Napa Valley White Wine

The 2012 White Wine blend consists of Sauvignon blanc, Ribolla gialla, Semillon, and Tocai fruilano as in previous years, but is more ripe and exuberant than past vintages, reflecting the warm growing season. We find fresh cream on the nose accompanied by key lime pie and flavors of passion fruit, lychee, and lemon curd. There’s a long stony/saline finish from the Ribolla, bright pineapple from the Sauvignon blanc, and the Semillon balances the wine with a beeswax character that adds gravity and weight. 1,092 Cases produced.

2011 MATTHIASSON Napa Valley Vermouth

2011 MATTHIASSON Napa Valley Vermouth

This is a sweet Italian-style vermouth that would be great in a cocktail (especially a Negroni) or alone as an aperitif. The wine it is based on is made from a variety called Flora, which was bred at UC Davis by the legendary Harold Olmo back in the 50’s. It is a cross between Semillon and Gewurtztraminer. After barrel aging the wine for 26 months, we used neutral grape spirits to make infusions of fresh blood orange zest, sour cherries, coriander, cardoons, chinchona bark, wormwood, and blessed thistle. 160 Cases of half bottles produced. Limited to 6 bottles per customer.
